Well that was a weekend for the books. Clean-Dezert decided this year we would get a jump start on the weekend and shoot out to Barstow Thursday morning. We stopped off in Victorville to fill up on food for the BBQ and water for the volunteers. After spending over an hour filling 2 shopping carts and a large flat bed push cart we were off to Barstow. Figuring we could spend Thursday to set up and organize everything, we were pleasantly surprised that a couple people were already out there and were excited for the weekend to come.

Saturday morning was D day for us. We had 2 scrap metal bins and 6 dumpsters set up and ready to go dontated by BLM, Friends of El Mirage and the city of Barstow. By 9am we already had 425 people signed up, and we knew it was going to be a big event. We even decided to head back out and get more food just in case. With people trickling in all day long, the final tally for the participates was somewhere around 475 people. Thats about 100 more participates than last year. We were pretty confident that the dumpsters were going to be full and we would need to dump 2 of them during the event to keep them from over flowing. By the end of the weekend we were able to fill a total of 10 dumpsters and pull out roughly 300-400 tires.

At noon we put on the BBQ for all the participates, This was the point where we realized this was a huge event. The line for food reached across the entire camp. Luckily we had everything set up and started cooking early this year. It still took over an hour to get through lunch. I apologize for the wait, but I hope everyone enjoyed the food. This year with the help of Kevin Clowes and his father, we were able to provide fresh produce for the burgers.

After lunch we had the task of doing one of the biggest raffles I have ever been involved in and I am pretty sure the biggest raffle ever held in the desert. I lost count of how much product we had to give away, but I estimate it was probably around $8,000 worth of prizes and gift certificates. The grand price being a Full Floater rear axle donated by Camburg Engineering. We also had bumpstops, intake systems, gift certificates, and shirts from the biggest companies in the industry. This is the least we can do to give back to all the people who come out to help keep our deserts clean.

All in all this was by far the biggest and best clean-up we have had to date. Without the help from sponsors and friends there is no way we could have pulled this off. I want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped behind the scenes and worked hard to make this happen. So thank you Jerrod, Josb, Kevin, AJ, Kristina, Christine, Durr, Kevin, Kevin’s dad, Pahl, Kamber, Gary, Allison, Matt and to my girlfriend Lisa for letting me spend all my free time setting this up. Also a huge thanks to John and Rose at the BLM for all their hard work, Parkhouse Tire for disposing of all the tires we brought in and Rob for hauling those tires for me. And most importantly all of our sponsors and participates because without you guys there would be no clean up.

Well its safe to say that the Clean-dezert.org Barstow cleanup was a complete success, from the amount of people that showed up and the mountain of trash the we gathered and removed. We would like to start off by thanking everyone who came out and volunteered thier time, and also sponsors such as: FOX SHOCKS, AEM INTAKES, CAMBURG, GLASS WORKS, IRONCLAD GLOVES, RICHER RACING, DMZ FABRICATIONS, BTF FABRICATIOINS, PCI RACE RADIOS, RRP FABRICATION,DEZERT NATION and everyone else who made this possible.

We counted 232 people who registered for the cleanup and know that there were some who showed up just to help out, and didn’t get in on the raffle or rides. This was a noble gesture and appreciated by those that won some of the prizes!

Everyone that showed up was extremely pumped for this event and we couldn’t have been more excited by the showing. Scott and the guys from Camburg showed up with the burg bus on Friday, and the guys from Richer racing and DMZ fab all getting there early to support the cause, thanks guys! With 20-30 people showing up Friday night, we knew we were going to have a good showing but were still a little nervous to see if our effort were going to pay-off.

When we got up Saturday morning we were greeted with a line of cars, trucks, buggies, and a Unimog and they continued to show up for more then an hour. We started the cleanup a little late due to all of the people that showed up but after they headed out, it didn’t take long for the junk to start piling up at the dumpsters. As has become pretty standard in or deserts there was a lot of commercial and residential trash thrown in every nook and crannie of the Barstow OHV We did some spotting on Friday and Ray volunteered to to play rover to look for some of the worst area to give some assistance finding “junk gold” as some of the volunteers were claiming it!!!! We filled six dumpster in a little over two and half hours and could have used 5-6 more! People dragged in cars, mountains of tires, refrigerators, Couches, porn, Gallons of paint, roofing materials, you name it and it was taken from our deserts!

After the cleanup we prepared the food provided by Camburg Engineering and prepared for the raffle while the last few truck were coming back to camp! It was really cool to watch people break there backs all day, and then see some of those same people get to win some of the cool stuff that got donated. I personally noticed that the couple who came down from the Friends of Johnson Valley both won stuff, as well as one of the guys from the CORVA crew that come out.

THANKS to all of you for the support.

On Saturday night we did the usual desert fire-pit meet and greet that was topped off by the band COSTELLO from Huntington Beach playing on the back of Camburg Toter home. These guys were fun to watch and have a great sound, you should check them out if you get a chance. Thanks guys! You can check out there album on iTunes.

Sunday morning was a slow one as you could imagine, as everyone was pretty spent after the cleanup and staying out by the fire or a feverish game of beer-pong so it got off a little later then we expected (but this was a racing related event, so nobody was shocked!) We have quite a few trucks show up and would like to thanks the guys that gave all the volunteers a lap around the course! Dan Vance, Charles and Rob Anderson, Dave Leepr, Andy (green explorer) James hooligan, and everyone else who donated rides in thier vehicles.

Clean-dezert.org would like to also thank John Kavanaugh from the Bureau of Land Management for the assistance keeping this organized as well as helping to get stuff sorted out. We hope to have a long beneficial relationship with the BLM so that these events can continue to take place and having a guy like John who appreciate our efforts can only help that relationship!

Our third mini clean-up of the series was held in Barstow off of Oulet Center Drive. We showed up Sunday morning to a 40 cu roll off dumpster. The weather was perfect, not too hot for being the middle of summer. After our last event in Barstow we decided that having a roll off would be a better solution since we filled the dump truck in record time. As we started setting up the booth, people started showing up for the clean-up eager and ready to clean. The majority of the large items were from the College Hills area off Barstow Road. We brought in a couple couches, mattresses and an assortment of other dumped items. While we picked up trash out of bushes and cans from the dirt around the main OHV area, we noticed that the trash was greatly reduced from our previous clean-ups. Hopefully it has something in part to do with us making a presence in the area and picking up the trash a couple months prior.

By the end of the clean-up we had a full dumpster and a sense of satisfaction from the day’s hard work. One more dumpster filled, one less to pick up in the future.

Our second cleanup of the 2008 Mini Cleanup series took place at the end of Bessemer Mine Road and Soggy Dry Lake in Lucerne Valley. This was our first cleanup in this area and we weren’t completely sure what to expect. Because of it’s isolated location, we were confident that there would be less large refuse, unlike Barstow which is right off a major freeway.

Sure enough, the bulk of the work involved picking up stray trash stuck in the bushes near the restroom. BLM workers stated that this was not uncommon because campers would often leave their trashbags near the restrooms on their way out. These trashbags were easy prey for scavenging birds who would rip them open, thus causing the contents to be strewn across the desert by the wind.

Moral of the story? Pack it in, pack it out!

Special thanks again to Rose at the BLM for arranging the trash disposal as well as big thanks to BLM staff members John and Steve for their help in the cleanup effort.

It’s been two years since Clean-Dezert has been to Barstow. Hoping to continue the tradition that started with Clean-Dezert’s inaugural cleanup in December 2006, the group returned to begin a series of mini cleanups scheduled to coincide with the 2008 desert racing season.

The strategy: Rather than organizing only one large cleanup during the year, Clean-Dezert hopes to establish a consistent presence in the offroad and, more specifically, the desert racing community.

Racing enthusiasts themselves, Clean-Dezert founders Adam Filbin and Ray Regno recognized the challenge that might arise with scheduling a desert cleanup the same day as a race or even on an off weekend. Adam plans to enter his truck into a number of races this season, and like many other racers, every weekend is key in properly prepping the race truck for race day. In addition to that, rising gas prices may make the long drive for many wouldbe volunteers an expensive ordeal, especially if they frequent the races as well.

These challenges in mind, Clean-Dezert has teamed up with the local BLM Field office and is trying a new appraoch to desert cleanups by organizing short (2 hours in duration) mini cleanups scheduled to immediately follow select racing events throughout the 2008 racing season. Along with the usual cleanup advertising, Clean-Dezert will also be promoting the cleanups at race contingency and tech inspection. The group hopes that by setting up a community cleanup the day after a race, they will be able to leverage the needed manpower for the cleanups by recruiting people who are already in the desert to attend the races as well as increase the awareness of land issues and the growing problem of illegal dumping.

Depending on the success of these mini cleanups Clean-Dezert also hopes to use these cleanups to build momentum for a another large cleanup at the end of the year. In the future, Clean-Dezert aims to expand their mini cleanup schedule to include every scheduled offroad race in Southern California.

Quick Recap of today’s Mini Cleanup:

~25 volunteers

Volunteers were able to retrieve illegally dumped items along Outlet Center and the 247 as well as pickup a substantial amount of small items scattered by the wind.

This was a great turnout on such short notice. The BLM supplied a dump truck to haul the collected refuse, and the items retrieved well exceeded the truck’s capacity. We are definitely expecting an even larger turnout next time around and are hoping to be able to get a larger receptacle. =)

We were also able to sell a number of Clean-Dezert tshirts, stickers, and raffle tickets for our post cleanup raffle. 25% of all proceeds will be donated to CORVA to help keep our deserts open.

Special thanks to MORE Racing for allowing us to promote the event at contingency. Also, thanks to 1450-ORG, DezertTV, BTF Fab, and all our volunteers for coming out to help. Thanks also, to all our raffle sponsors, and most especially, a big thank you goes to Rose and Jaime at the Barstow BLM for helping us with the trash disposal.

Until next time, KEEP IT CLEAN, KEEP IT OPEN!

-Ray
